발화는 인상적으로 읽었던 소설의 한 장면으로 부터 출발했다. 소설 속 화자는 강력한 불빛을 들고 있는 누군가와 대치하고 있다. 강한 빛 때문에 그는 빛 뒤에 있는 상대방의 얼굴을 볼 수 없다. 상대방은 빛 속에 숨어있고 자신의 면면은 상대에게 전부 노출되고 있는 불균형한 상황에서 화자는 심리적 압박을 느낀다. 빛과 말에 대해 익히 알려진 은유에 의존하는 이 작업은 말에 대한 양가적인 생각을 담고 있다. 영상 속 화자는 빛에 의해 드러나지만 다른 한편, 그가 발화하는 순간에야 비로소 빛 속에 숨을 수 있다. 빛에 의해 드러나고 빛 속에서 은닉하는 작업의 내용이 전시 상황에 동일하게 적용되어, 해가 지고 어둠이 찾아오는 시점에 영상은 비로소 건물 외벽에 서서히 모습을 드러낸다.
Speech begins with the inspiration from the scene of a novel that I read. The narrator in the novel is confronting with someone holding a powerful light. Because of the strong light, he cannot see the counterpart’s face hidden behind the light. The narrator feels psychological pressure in the situation that the person hidden in the light is able to see himself revealed by the light. The work, Speech, depending on the well-known metaphor between light and language, deals with the ambivalent mind towards language. The speaker in the video is visible by the light, on the other hand, she can conceal herself only when she speak out with the light in her mouth. The idea of concealing with the light and revealing in the dark is applied to the exhibition circumstance, the video gradually appears on the outer wall of exhibition building as daylight goes down in the sunset.
