책은 세 장의 긴 종이를 겹쳐 접은 아코디언 형태로, 할머니, 엄마, 그리고 딸로 이어지는 세 세대의 목소리를 담고 있다. 각각의 종이에서 세 사람은 각자 자신의 엄마가 어떻게 살아 왔는지에 관해 이야기한다. 세 사람의 얽혀진 기억들 - 같은 장소와 사람, 비슷한 삶의 패턴 - 을 기준으로 기억은 재배치되고 겹쳐진다. 책은 두 가지 방식으로 읽을 수 있도록 설계되었다. 일반적인 방식으로 책장을 옆으로 넘기면서 읽으면 세 사람이 번갈아가며 이야기를 이끄는 연대기적 서술을 읽게 된다. 한 페이지를 들춰보는 식으로 책을 읽으면 같은 장소, 사람 혹은 사건에 대한 세 세대의 가상적 대화를 읽게 된다.
This accordion book consists of three long sheets of paper, and each page contains the voices of three generations: grandmother, mother, and daughter. Each of them speaks about how their mother had lived or is living. Some parts of their stories overlap when they talk about the same person or place, or similar patterns. The book is edited and rearranged based on these overlaps and designed to be read in multiple ways. Readers can follow the chronological narratives of the three speakers by flipping through the pages, in the traditional way of reading a book. When readers lift the pages, they can read three layers of fictional conversation between the grandmother, mother, and daughter, reflecting on shared memories or patterns.
