엄마의 엄마의 / 2019 / 책, 가변 설치 / 옷가지들로 만든 종이
옷가지들에서 추출된 섬유로 만들어진 종이들이 공간을 이루고 있고, 그 가운데에는 한 권의 책이 놓여있다. 책은 세 장의 긴 종이를 앞뒤로 접은 아코디언 북의 형식으로 되어있으며, 할머니, 엄마, 그리고 딸로 이어지는 세 세대의 목소리를 담고 있다. 각각의 종이에는 한 사람이 이야기를 하고 있다. 세 사람은 모두 자신의 엄마가 어떻게 살아왔는지에 관해 이야기한다.
세 사람의 기억의 많은 부분은 얽혀있다. 얽혀진 부분들 - 같은 장소와 사람, 비슷한 삶의 패턴 - 을 기준으로 기억은 재배치되고 겹쳐진다. 이러한 편집과정을 통해, 이 책은 두가지 방식으로 읽을 수 있도록 설계되었다. 일반적인 방식으로 책장을 옆으로 넘기면서 읽으면 세 사람이 번갈아가며 이야기를 이끄는 연대기적 서술을 읽게된다. 한 페이지를 들춰보는 식으로 책을 읽으면 같은 장소, 사람 혹은 사건에 대한 세 세대의 가상적 대화를 읽게 된다.
Mothers' Mother's / 2019 / interactive installation with artist's book / paper made out of cloths
The space is made out of papers which come from fibers of cloths , and a book is placed on the center of the space. This accordion book is consisted of three long sheets of papers, and each pages contain three generation’s voices: grandmother, mother, and daughter. Each of them talks about how their mother had or has lived.
The text source is from the interviews with my mother’s side grandmother and mother, and my own talking. Some parts of their talking are shared and overlapped when they talk about the same person or place, or similar patterns. I edited and rearranged the text based on the overlapped parts, and designed the book to be read in multiple ways. Readers could read the chronological narratives led by three speakers, by flipping pages, in a traditional way of reading books. When readers lift pages, they could read three layers of fictional conversation between the grandmother, mother and daughter about shared memories or patterns.
