옥수수 종이 Maize Paper (2019~)

식물성 섬유를 물에 풀어 잘게 간 후에, 다시 물기를 빼내고 말려 종이가 만들어진다. 종이에는 인간이 어떻게 환경에 적응했고 그것을 어떻게 활용하였는가에 대한 지혜가 한장의 얇은 막으로 물화되어 있다. 텃밭을 키우면서 옥수수를 비롯한 식물성 섬유로 종이를 만드는 작업을 진행했다. 식물의 생장과 그것의 생김새, 재료를 갈고 삶는 공정을 통과하며 변화하는 물질의 상태를 탐구하는 일은 어떤 것을 자세히, 아주 가까이에서 들여다보는 즐거움이 있는 일이었다.

송주원과 협업

작업은 옥수수라는 식물을 통해, 믿음과 기원하는 몸짓에 대해 이야기한다. 고대 마야인들의 믿음을 비롯한 여러 문화권의 믿음과 신화적 이야기들을 모티프로 작업을 만들었다. 문서진과 송주원은 이러한 상징과 더불어 개인적 기억을 더해, 죽음이 빗겨간 순간에 생존을 가능하게 했던 움직임과 소리를 추척한다. <말문이 막힐때, 옥수수수수수수수수수수수>(2022)는 살아남아 왔다는 것에 대한 겸손을 상기하고 살아나가기 위한 소망을 비는 제의적인 시도로써 제작되었다.

The work is about the human belief and the act of wishing through the lens of maize which has been significantly related to human’s history and agriculture. The work deals with the myths and believes from multiple cultures and histories: Mayans’ religious believes towards maize, old myth that creatures looking like body parts of human can replace human, and the legend in Korean culture about magpies as beings providing new teeth and receiving old ones. Joowon and I intertwined the myths and personal stories of surviving and wishing, tracing the movements and sounds of moments that I saved the life from the death. The work is an attempt to remind the humbleness of having been saved and pray to survive for the next.
